Leviticus 15

As a woman, I have always been fascinated with the way different cultures dealt with menstruation. I know the Bible has gotten a lot of grief over women being "unclean" during their periods, and the way they were separated from the people for 7 days, but really, treatment like this was common in ancient cultures.

I am offended, of course, that a women needed to offer two birds, one as a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, to make "atonement" for her "sin" of having a period. Every month. I mean I understand the need for separation. They didn't have the many wonderful feminine hygiene products we have available today, but a sin offering?

At least there was some gender equality. A man who had an "issue of seed" was also considered unclean, and had to bathe in water and was to be separate from the congregation "until evening."

I can only say I am thankful to be living in an age and place where quality feminine hygiene products are readily available, and my heart aches for the girls and women in places in the world today where they don't have easy access to those products, and are discriminated against because of it.
