Leviticus 14
Leviticus 14: 7 "He shall let the living bird loose into the open field." KJV
Two birds, both brought as a sacrifice, one killed, the other set free.
I will admit I really struggle reading Leviticus. There is so much death and blood, and I'm just like, "Why, God, why?" I know the intellectual answers. The sacrifices pointed to Christ's sacrifice, it was a different time and culture, but I still hate it, and I still complain that is seems unnecessary, cruel, and wasteful. I mean, if you're going to kill innocent animals, at least eat them. But often they are burnt to ashes.
Of course I am impressed at the way people with rashes weren't automatically sent away, that there was a procedure in place to determine if what they had was really contagious. I supposed it was an advanced concept at the time, before they had microscopes to determine if the infection was caused by mycobacterium lepromatosis or something more benign.
Still, I struggle with finding meaning in many of these passages, and can only say I appreciate the fact God does not despise me for questioning. Rather, he wants me to "come and reason" with him, and enjoys the fact we can enter into dialog, and still love each other despite our disagreements.
I am the bird that was set free.
